What is the instrumental music program?

Manasquan High School's instrumental music program offers interested students a complete program of band music preparation and performance. It gives students not only the satisfaction, pride, and enjoyment of a wide variety of performances, but also prepares them for entrance into college groups. It includes musical experiences in concert band, marching band, jazz band, and various other ensembles.

What is expected of you?

JAZZ BAND: is an honors ensemble. All candidates for the jazz band must audition on the scheduled date/dates. If a student cannot make the audition a new date must be arranged at the convenience of the director.

Any jazz band member risks release from the group for any one or more of the following reasons:

  1. Any unexcused absence from rehearsal or performance.
  2. Unexcused late to performance or rehearsal.
  3. Not remaining for the entire rehearsal.
  4. Unprepared for rehearsal.
  5. Lack of improvement

The Jazz Band at MHS has achieved a high level of performance and much acclaim over the past several years and in order to maintain this level of performance a certain degree of commitment must be exhibited by each member of the ensemble.

This high level of performance also ensures that the MHS Jazz Band will be competitive with the other excellent jazz bands in the area and will ensure  a high level of self esteem for its members.

This is an honors ensemble and is meant to be a musical outlet for the more dedicated, motivated and serious-minded high school musicians.

INTEREST: band is work; to achieve this level of success it is necessary! However, band members participate because they are interested in, and have an honest desire to succeed in playing, band music. This interest is usually enough with little or no incentive.

PRACTICE: just as in your other subjects, you will have homework, and 99% of the time it will be in the form of practice on your instrument. Hopefully, you will not mind this 'homework'. We recommend 30 minutes or more daily until you are comfortable with your music

ATTENDANCE: the Warrior Band and it's satellite ensembles are performance oriented. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that you attend all rehearsals and performances in order to receive a high grade*. This includes Band Camp, which plays a large role in the success of performances during football season. While it is understood that plans/vacations my coincide with Band Camp it should also be understood that failure to attend this important practice time with result in removal from the halftime performance of individuals who are part of the marching maneuvers, no exceptions*. Read on to review the band grading system.

Eligibility for honors groups and college bands:

Band members may audition for county, state, and national honor groups such as All-Shore, Regional, and State Band and Orchestra. Participation in band programs also prepares the student for entrance into college band programs

*Attendance rules will apply to rescheduled performances if reasonable notice is given. _*Adjuncts with unexcused absences risk being removed from the band.
